One Chinese character for me
In Japan, one Chinese character to reflect social conditions is chosen annually at the end of the year. 戦 (Ikusa), which means war or battle, was chosen for the Chinese character of the year for 2022. This was because we have been affected by war.
What about me? If I were to choose one Chinese character for 2022 for myself, what would I choose? Also, if I were to choose one Chinese character to represent my life up to now, what would I choose? To be honest, at first a few negative characters such as 失 (shitsu - meaning loss) or 悔 (kai - meaning regrets) came to mind. However, I tried to count the good things that had happened to me, and I was filled with a feeling of satisfaction. Nobody is free from cares, but you can be happy in any situation if you make a conscious effort to pay attention to the positive aspects of your life. As a result of these considerations, I chose 満 (man) (満足), which means contentment, for 2022 as well as for my life up to now.
Memories from my trips
What country would you like to visit in the future?
I've been to several countries. Traveling to those countries was a lot of fun! I'd like to share some of my experiences with you.
My trip to New Zealand
I went to New Zealand with some friends in April. As you know, the seasons there are opposite those in Japan, and it was autumn at that time. Dried autumn leaves were scattered all around. It was warm during the day, but I felt cold at night.
I was impressed by all the rolling green hills and pasture, which extended as far as the eye could see! There were lots of sheep grazing on the pasture. Actually, there are more sheep than humans in New Zealand.
When we went to Auckland, I discovered that a lot of people there have yachts. Interestingly, Auckland City had the highest ratio of yacht owners in the world. We too went sailing and we relaxed and enjoyed the view of the ocean.
We went horseback riding. Our instructor took us into the mountains, though we were beginners. We rode in the mountains for about three hours. The name of my horse was Ginger, and I'd been told that she was gentle. I thought she was, but when there was a slight downhill slope, she began to run, and it was scary. Actually, a friend of mine failed to rein in her horse and fell off. Fortunately, she didn't get hurt.
We went to a place called the Kiwi House. Kiwis are nocturnal birds, and the light was kept dim in their enclosure. It was the first time I'd ever seen a kiwi in reality. It was small and round and had a pointed bill. I really liked that unique and cute bird.
On our flight home we were offered lamb or chicken, and of course I chose lamb. It was really good. We were relieved to get back to Japan safely. On the way home I was immersed in fond memories of New Zealand.
My trip to New York
I had a great time in New York! My friends and I went there on a package tour, and the tour guide took us to various interesting places. During the tour, we went to Broadway, Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, Ground Zero, Century 21 (a discount department store), a Walmart store, Central Park, Fifth Avenue, and so on.
We saw the musical called "Cats" on Broadway. Before this, I wasn't familiar with musicals, but while watching it, I realized that the actors were excellent singers and dancers. For a while after that, the song "Memory" crossed my mind often.
Woodbury Common Premium Outlets is a popular tourist spot for shopping. We did some shopping at Coach. We were able to buy some Coach products at half the usual price. There were some Chinese people buying bags and some other things in bulk. This explosive kind of shopping is called "bakugai" in Japanese. A lot of people in our group bought bags or purses. At first, I was going to get some presents for friends, but their tastes were varied, so I gave up on the idea.
After that, we went to Ground Zero and saw the September 11 Memorial, on which the names of the many victims were engraved. The mood there was sober. People in New York seemed to be living peacefully while we were there, so it was incredible to realize that such a tragedy had happened there.
There is a discount department store called "Century 21" near Ground Zero. The discount store offered Godiva chocolate and coffee at reasonable prices, and one of my friends and I both got a lot of chocolates as gifts. We were done with our shopping, but there were still over two hours left until the meeting time, and besides it was already dark outside. We looked for a place to rest, holding the chocolate in our arms at night in New York. We went to a Burger King so that we could have a seat. It was Friday night, and a lot of young people were standing in line at the cash register. They were talking to one another loudly, and some of them were dancing. My friend was scared to be there, so soon after having some orange juice, we left the shop. When we got back to the department store, we found out that there was a place to rest on the third floor, and we were able to use carts to carry the items we'd bought.
The following morning, we went to a Walmart. They offered a wide range of products, and we didn't know what to buy. The tour guide recommended toothpaste. He told us that American people had a keen interest in oral hygiene and that there were various types of toothpaste in the country. I bought one for myself.
After that we went to Central Part. We heard that John Lennon had been shot to death in front of a building near the park and saw the "Imagine" mosaic. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to take a walk there.
We walked along Fifth Avenue, where brand-name shops are located on both sides of the street. Trump Tower is located there next to a Tiffany's store. We went into the building. Some of the walls inside were shiny and ornate. There were several stalls there where cheap things for five or ten dollars were being sold. The tour guide suggested buying something cheap at a stall and giving it to someone as a gift and saying, "I bought this on Fifth Avenue."
Time had passed quickly, and soon the last day of the tour came. It was a beautiful day. It was as if New York City were seeing us off smiling. We boarded the plane, and as it took off, I saw everything in New York gradually becoming smaller and more distant, and I was already missing New York. My trip to New York brings back fond memories each time I remember them.
